The History of Imo State

Imo State was created in 1976 during the military administration of General Murtala Mohammed. Named after the Imo River, the state has a rich history that predates its formal establishment.

The region has been home to the Imo people for centuries, with deep historical roots in agriculture, trade, and cultural development. The state capital, Owerri, has grown from a small market town to a bustling modern city while maintaining its cultural heritage.
